Welcome to Oakengates Medical Practice, where your care matters
Thank you for visiting our practice website. The aim of our website is to keep you informed of the services available for your health care and well being.
If you would like to see other topics covered on our website please contact the surgery and we will consider all suggestions.
Why wait outside on cold wintery days or wait in a queue when you can book your appointments from the comfort of your own home/office via telephone or online access.
Due to patient feedback we have significantly invested in improving our telephone access resulting in less waiting times for patients to get through to reception by telephone. We also offer our patients the facility to book or cancel their appointments and order repeat prescriptions online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Please ask at reception for further details or click on the Patient Access Icon (brown icon) above. We can also offer on request the facility for you to be able to view parts of your medical record including test results (subject to ID checks) so you no longer have to wait on the telephone to get your test result or ask whether your letter has come back from the hospital.
Addressing the National GP shortage
Due to the national shortage of GPs non urgent A&E attendances have increased and the government has asked local CCGs and surgeries to address this problem. As a result we have adjusted our appointment system to increase patient same day access. The majority of our appointments will be released on the day with a few for each GP being bookable in advance.
It has been highlighted in the news for some months now that it is becoming increasingly difficult to replace GPs with other GPs, therefore the practice like many other surgeries have recruited other clinical practitioners such as Advance Nurse Practitioners, Associate Physicians, Urgent Care Practitioners and Nurse Prescribers. As a result of this receptionists thoughout General Practices have been asked by the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to ask patients to provide a brief outline of the reason why you need to be seen. This is not because they are being nosey it’s so they can help us to sign post you to the most appropriate clinician for your healthcare and help shorten appointment waiting times.
If you would prefer not to say, you can state it is personal however you must be aware that your condition cannot be prioritized accordingly which may result in a delay in the most appropriate care for your needs. All our receptionists have received Information Governance (IG) training in patient confidentiality so please be assured your information will be treated in the strictest confidence. You can also request to discuss anything confidentially away from the reception desk.
We are delighted to welcome Dr Niye Yomi-Adeleke to the practice who started in November as a Fully Qualified Salaried GP who works 8 sessions per week.
We are still in the process of recruiting GPs to replace those who have left and during this period there may be longer waiting times for a GP appointment. We will endeavor to minimize this as much as possible but ask for your patience and understanding during this time.
Thank you for your understanding and for your co-operation during this period of recruitment.
Self-referral to Physiotherapy
This is a new service that our practice is trying out.
We know that for most people, early assessment and advice from a Physiotherapist will help improve or resolve many muscular, joint and spine complaints. At the moment, people may have to wait to see their GP, who then arranges a referral for treatment, which may involve yet another wait. We would like to reduce the time people have to wait to be seen for muscular and joint problems so that they can get better quicker.
We currently use telephone assessment to find out what advice and treatment may be required. The Physiotherapy Telephone Triage Service is well established in Shropshire and is set up to provide early advice and management for adults with back, neck & joint problems, soft tissue problems or injuries.
Patients will be assessed by an experienced Physiotherapist who will be able to accurately assess and provide early advice and guidance in managing their condition. Should a course of treatment be necessary, the triage physiotherapist will refer the patient to their local physiotherapy service.
If you feel your problem is related to your joints, muscles, back or neck, and you are over 16 years of age, please contact the Physiotherapy Telephone Triage Service on 01743 454912
Monday –Friday 9am-5pm to arrange a telephone consultation with a Physiotherapist.
However, if you feel generally unwell, have chest or abdominal pain, please book an appointment with your GP in the usual way.

Join our Patient Group
The Practice is recruiting for our Virtual Patient Participation Group.
Oakengates Medical Practice would like to hear your views on how we can improve our services at the surgery.
The practice already has a Patient Participation Group who meet on a quarterly basis which is very pro active in helping the practice improve its patient services. However we are aware that it is sometimes inconvenient or difficult for people to give up their valuable time to come to meetings here at the surgery, therefore we would like to set up a Virtual Patient Participation Group which will run alongside our current Patient Group.
The aim is to reach out to a wide range of our patients and ask for their feedback as to how our surgery is doing.
If you would be happy to be contacted via email, no more than 3-4 times a year, to give us your views and participate in the occasional patient survey please click here.
