City & Guilds Customer Care Award 

Following patient feedback we felt it important to use our allocated training time to focus on Customer Care.

Fifteen staff were enroled on a City & Guilds Customer Service course that ran over two half day sessions in May and June 2015.  A trainer from Always Consult came to the surgery to facilitate this training and ensured the exam at the end of the final session was taken under exam conditions.

As a result we are pleased to say all 15 members of staff including Managers, receptionists and administrators passed their Level 2 City & Guilds Award in Customer Service, with the majority receiving a ‘first class’ pass.

Booking appointments in advance

Following recent feedback from our patients, it has been brought to our attention that some patients are unaware of the ability to book appointments in advance. 
We hope the following points help clear any confusion. 


  • Appointments can be booked up to 4 weeks in advance, subject to availability. 
  • On contact patients will be offered the next available appointment with a clinician – we cannot guarantee this will be the time or GP of your choice, although we do try to accommodate such requests, subject to GP and appointment availability.
  • Appointments can be booked via the telephone, visiting the surgery or using our online service *’Patient Access’.
  • Nurse practitioners offer same and next day appointments.

Please note our telephone lines are at their busiest between 08.30-10.00am.  For routine appointments please telephone after these times.

Named Accountable Gp

Under new GP contract terms each patient (including children) is now allocated a named accountable GP, who is responsible for the patient’s overall care.  For more information Please click here.

The new contract does not change how the current appointment system works and patient’s can still request to see any clinician within the practice. 



Nurse Practitioner Services

The practice now has two nurse practitioners who can see you for acute minor illness and injuries,

If you require the contraceptive pill please make an appointment with a nurse practitioner who can prescribe the contraceptive pill and the morning after pill.

This practice now offers patients the facility to not only book, view, amend, cancel, print appointments  and order repeat prescriptions online but to be able to view parts of their medical record.

Oakengates Medical Practice now offers its patients the facility to view online, export or print any summary information from their record, relating to medications, allergies, adverse reactions and immunisations, subject to registering for Patient Access.

If you are a registered patient you can book a 10 minute appointment to see a doctor or nurse by calling 01952 620 077.  The practice appointment times are:

Monday 08:30 – 11:10 hrs.  14:00 – 17:20 hrs.
Tuesday 08:30 – 11:10 hrs.  14:00 – 17:20 hrs.
Wednesday 08:30 – 11:10 hrs.  14:00 – 17:20 hrs.
Thursday 08:30 – 11:10 hrs.  14:00 – 17:20 hrs.
Friday 08:30 – 11:10 hrs.  14:00 – 17:20 hrs.

If you are unable to book a routine appointment and have a Medical Emergency for the same day, between 8.30am and 6pm, you will be offered either a telephone or face to face appointment with a Nurse Practitioner or the Duty Doctor.  In the event that the Duty Doctor appointments are booked you may be invited by the Nurse Practitioner to sit and wait after surgery. 

Please consider carefully whether you feel your medical problem requires same day attention

Out of Hours

When the surgery is closed Shropdoc will provide cover for the surgery.  This service is for urgent medical care, if you feel your condition is life threatening phone 999 for the ambulance service.

Between the hours of 18:00  – 08.30 – Monday – Friday, weekends and bank holidays telephone  08444 068888, which is Shropshire Doctors’ Co-operative (SHROPDOC).   

Please only call if you feel that the problem cannot wait until the next doctor’s surgery.
